Fort Tilden today is largely a natural area of beach, dunes and maritime forest. Most of the old military installations are abandoned, though some buildings have been renovated and are used by local arts groups. Atop one of the old batteries, Battery Harris East, is a viewing platform offering 360-degree views that encompass the city, New York Harbor and the Atlantic Ocean. We feel this is the best (free) beach around. You will see jetty after jetty. Pick your spot, and enjoy the solitude. No whistles from over zealous life guards, no screaming, only serenity... oh and one topless mom. You decide if that is a positive or negative.

First of all, you just about made my romantic gland explode; secondly, that beach is mighty impressive in the solitude stakes for NY...
...won't it be nice when you come visit the solitude of a NZ beach? Even 'Hot Water Beach' can be private at the right time of day (you can dig for thermal springs of hot water and then build channels of cool water from the incoming waves to create your own perfect temp. sand-spa. So fricken awesome.
